Pray

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.’  1 Timothy 2:1-3 (NIV)

As Christians we believe that it is vital that we underpin all that we do and say with prayer, so we hope that these prayer points will be helpful over the period of the General Election.

General Prayer Points

  • Pray for your local church leaders and members, especially if they are involved in hustings or other Election meetings.  Intercede that hundreds of churches around the country will hold such events so that every constituency will be covered.
  • As each week begins, remember the wards in your own constituency, focusing on any particular issues relating to these local communities.
  • Pray for the safety of volunteers canvassing and delivering leaflets door to door and campaigning in public places.
  • Remember those working in the various Party headquarters who have been responsible for compiling the manifestos, and those who will present them to the public. Pray that they do so with integrity.
  • Pray for Christian believers in positions of authority within the Parties. Ask God to provide opportunities for them to influence policy content.
  • Remember the media, and pray for national and local newspaper editors to be discerning and fair during the campaign, ensuring articles and news items are balanced and truthful.
  • Pray about the role of ‘digital media’ on the electorate; that blogs, tweets and other online communications will enable more people to express their views and used responsibly.
  • Ask God to watch over and grant  safety, good health and welfare of party leaders and other prominent politicians as they travel extensively throughout the country.
  • Pray that Christian candidates will be bold and eloquent especially in how they respond to issues and questions that have important moral and ethical implications.
  • Pray that Christian candidates will find time themselves to pray as they work hard leading up to Polling Day – and that many will be elected.
  • Continue to hold the many planned hustings events in your prayers, covering every detail of planning, publicity and the events themselves.
  • Pray for a good turnout on Polling Day, and remember the thousands of staff and volunteers serving round the country.

Prayer After the Election

  • Pray for the Queen  as she calls the leader of the winning party to Buckingham Palace to invite him to form her new Government.
  • Pray for every new MP as they take in the implications of being elected to represent their constituents; that they would realise their need of God’s guidance and strength.
